Yuan Xiao Celebration

While away from home, what better way to enjoy the festive spirit of Chinese New Year than to be in the company of fellow Singaporeans? The 元宵节 Yuan Xiao Jie celebration held on the 9th of February at the Singapore Consulate-General, saw Singaporeans and friends from all over Shanghai gather to usher in the new year together.

Jointly organized by the Singapore Shanghai Business Association (SSBA) and SHEN, the occasion received a huge turnout of 180 Singaporeans, young and old. Upon their arrival, guests were treated to a screening of home-grown movie Money Not Enough 2, whilst enjoying delectable ice-cream from Swensen’s, before heading to lau yusheng as one big family. Distinguished guests, Consul-General Yip Wei Kiat and SSBA President Jonathan Seah, kindly led us in the enthusiastic recital of auspicious sayings during the lau yusheng segment so that 2009 will bring good luck and health to one and all!

To top the evening off, an exciting line-up of performances were prepared by SHEN to entertain guests over a sumptuous dinner buffet from Frankie’s. Oh Chee Yong from 11th SHEN astounded the audience with two of his melodic Er-hu pieces. Jayne Guo, Jolene Fu, Angela Ho and Brian Chen, all from 10th SHEN, also led the crowd in singing festive songs and the latter two went on to indulge us with a love duet sang in perfect harmony. Seet Toh Siew Wee and Poh Hao Jie, also from the 10th batch, were the hosts for the evening. They amused the audience with their wit and jest while conducting festive games such as Fastest Fingers Fastest Mouth and 猜灯谜 of which the grand prize was bird nest specially sponsored by Sim Kee Han, one of our very own SHEN member.

Last but not least, to end the evening in true festive style, guests were invited to catch a fireworks and firecrackers display. The celebration was a huge
success and SHEN would like to thank SSBA, all its members and contributing partners and friends for making it a night to remember!
