Exciting Times and Opportunities in China – A Reinforcement of NCSH Purpose in Shanghai
The SSSBA-SCS Business Forum, held on 27th November, revolves around the theme “China –The Next Leap”. As the theme would suggest, the series of talks was targeted at the tremendous potential and future development of China.
Speaking on the growth in China, Mr. Chik Wai Chiew from Temasek Holdings (Shanghai Office) mentioned that sectors such as real estate, healthcare, infrastructure, financial, new media etc. are poised to grow and hence areas with investment opportunities. From a geographical perspective, in the long run, growth and investments will shift towards the relatively undeveloped West China and Northeast China will see a period of renewed growth.
Amidst the excitement over China’s development, the message from Mr. Cheng Bing from DBS Bank (China) underscored the Chinese government’s tone of cautiousness towards the future. The Chinese government commitment to maintain “八保” and adoption of a “稳护调防” strategy highlights the high degree of careful planning to mitigate risks of voluminous growth.
In retrospect, SHEN is certainly fortunate to be able to assist in the running of this business forum. Being able to interact with the diversity of people and hear the opinions of the speakers broaden our perspective of China and establish new connections with people. The common message of spirited growth reminded us that there is so much more to China that has yet to be discovered and understood - the cultural dynamics, its traditional and contemporary philosophy, the arts and music scene, the food culture, the social new media development, the psychic and spirit of the masses, the political landscape, the economic growth and opportunities etc. This forum has subtly reinforced our purpose in Shanghai within our limited time – to learn, discover, make friendships and challenge ourselves in China.
